1. Anything that i’m not wearing anymore/often enough. I’d rather sell my stuff than give it away so I can use the money to buy more clothes, but if i dont think i’ll get a lot of money for it then i’ll give it to charity.

2. whenever i have time, maybe 10 times a year, i’ll sell clothes in bulk. No preference to as to what clothing i like to buy used. I sell more when i need the money for something

3. I can’t remember how i found the group, i hardly ever go on it to be honest.

4. No, i use ebay, i would buy from the group but i just feel like it’s not very safe, and ebay provides that safety

5. i’ve only ever used ebay from the ones listed, umm generally really like ebay, if i ever have a problem they’re always super quick to resolve it.

6. i can’t actually remember where i found it! maybe a fashion blog? i must have found it when i was looking for second hand galaxy print leggings. i don’t have any friends with in the group

7. selling for me is quite a long process. i like to take really good pictures and do a detailed description. so i’ll iron the thongs if needs be and sometimes i’ll take photos of me wearing them so the buyer has a better idea of what it looks like on

8. no i don’t. i look occasionally but i just think the stuff on there is a bit overpriced, on ebay you can bid and its all about luck and timing whereas on the facebook group they usually have a set price they’re willing to take.

9. generally if i was looking for clothes for myself i would only look for my size

10. i never really interact with the group – in regards to ebay i usually look at random clothes when i’m bored, unless i’m loooking for something specific

11. nope

12. can’t answer

13. can’t answer

14. can’t answer

15. umm from the little i’ve seen i would say mostly teenagers and people in their early twenties

16. not imperative, but it would give me more piece of mind. i’m usually hesitant to buy/sell abroad just in case it gets “lost in the post” or there’s a problem that i might have difficulty resolving

17. debit card, however if there is an option to meet the person and pay cash in hand i would prefer that, you could then look at the item and decide if you actually want to buy

18. not too sure

19. not too sure

sorry! i probably wasnt the best person to ask as i never use the group, hope this helped a little!

Ciara Joy

Jessica referred me to Ciara. She lives in Indiana but works in Illinois as a traveling model.

Ciara Joy

——————————————————-

She sells stuff that she doesn’t want anymore, but varies. She doesn’t give stuff away. Mostly sells when she realizes that she has too much stuff.

She buys most of her clothing used. She loves the story behind clothing. Usually from thrift shops because she likes getting clothing from different “looks.”

When she sells it’s mostly through eBay and she’s completely content with the solution.

Selling locally is NOT important to her. Buying locally is NOT important to her.

She prefers paying in cash for local purchases but she doesn’t really buy from strangers, mostly thrift store.

She wishes she could make what she owns more unique so it sells quicker, but completely content with her current buying experience.

She likes the idea of buying/selling used clothing, especially how we want to make it simpler.

Aaron Brown

Jessica referred me to Aaron. He is not a part of a major FB group. He lives in Maryland.

aaron brown

————————————————————

He usually sells custom t-shirts, accessories, or high-end used clothing. He’s more likely to sell unique clothing because he knows that has value.

He buys more than he sells. He likes to buy unique clothing. At times he’ll buy high end clothing used and cheaper, but he mostly buys unique used clothes.

B/w bargain and style, he’s more likely to buy for style.

He’s used some makeshift web solutions (fb groups and forums) and doesn’t like how it takes people forever to respond. “Seems like they don’t get notified about interest.”

He does like the community aspect and enjoys talking to sellers about the clothes, etc. He also communicates with other people in the community even if he’s not buying/selling. “The community is big for me.” He enjoys asking questions and sharing stuff other people would enjoy.

To buy in person, he likes to see it and try it on in person, so he’ll go to consignment shops or to his friends’.

To sell, he cleans the clothes, and tries to make sure that people know it’s a real person selling the clothing, not spam or a retailer.

His “go-to place” to sell clothing is FB. He doesn’t go to a specific group, he just posts on fb and sets up meeting times with interested people. He’ll also ask people over facebook what they’re looking for to see if he has something that matches.

He’s used eBay before, but he needs a community, so he didn’t really like the experience.

He usually looks at high-end sites for inspiration, then looks in used clothing communities for something similar.

Local is NOT a priority when he’s selling. What’s important to him is that what he sells is high quality.

Local is NOT a priority when he’s buying b/c he’s experienced enough to know if something will fit him or not.

With his friends, he’s more likely to swap than buy/sell.

He prefers paying with PayPal or a secured credit card transaction even if it’s local.

I met Jam through the Black Milk Clothing Group. She asked that I email her the questions. I need to start talking to people on the phone more.

1.What type of clothes do you sell? What determines if you sell a piece of clothing versus keeping it, giving it away, etc?

I sell clothes that I find I have no more practical use for but still think hold some sort of value. for instance blackmilk has a constant resale value someone will always be willing to buy something your willing to get rid of.
I also sell items that are from independent designers that make a lot of one of pieces I cant imagine just handballing a piece of clothing that I searched hard for or see something special in it.

2. How often do you sell clothing? Buy it? Is there a particular type of clothing you like to buy used? Is there a particular time when you find yourself buying/selling more than usual? How about for the other people in the group?

I sell clothing rarely, mainly when I’m going through some sort of reinvention phase or am in desperate need for extra cash. I know my clothing collection can collect a fair bit of coin, my wardrobe to me is more like a gallery rather then clothes I wear. (if that makes sense) I buy clothing only on impulse when I see something that I really like, that appeals to my identity (for eg. I was urban outfitters yesterday I saw a grey stussy tank with rasta colours thrown in it, I bought it without trying it on, didnt care for price it was something that screamed to my liking and I love it) I find myself buying more then usual (online) when I’m feeling a detatchment from other things, if life is mundane retail or online retail therapy goes a very long way sadly. I only really sell clothes when I can’t bear to give it up, plus I have dropped a fair bit of cash on my wardrobe it would be nice to get something back from some of my shopping mistakes.

3. Why do you use this group? What do you like/dislike about it? Absolute favorite thing and what do you hate the most about it?

I find the blackmilk buy sell swap over the years has become a bit to rigid and risky as apposed to when they only had 5000 fans when I was on it. it was more honest and personal exchange or selling of a product. Now there is too many rules about posts and the kind of internet speak you have and people are using it more as a search engine for themselves rather then to really do business.. Too many threats about using the page incorrectly and getting temporarily removed from the group. As much as I have dabbled and used that page I can’t help but want to tell the creators to get their heads out of their asses and realize its just a fucking resale group if anything your mocking blackmilk by setting up that sort of exchange, the only real favour theyve done for them is provide an unofficial refund for people who make regret purchases which I guess is why black milk tolerate it. I think the group functioned alot better when there wasnt so much traffic and popularity. and your posts wouldnt get lost and flooded under everyone elses. Also because people know about it now you get a lot of fakes on there which makes me hesitant, every now and then you might strike a good deal and get a piece you really wanted but missed at the launch date but otherwise I turn to ebay for selling my black milk. I still advertise it on the BSS page, but only if I’m in a hurry to get some extra cash.

4. Is this group the go-to place for you to sell clothing? Why or why not?

No its not my go to. I like ebay for these sorts of things when it comes to me selling before I buy anything from BSS I have to investigate the persons profile whose advertising something to sell to ensure I’m not getting jibbed

5. What other solutions have you tried to use? Have you ever tried eBay, Craigslist, Plato’s closet or a store that pays you, Poshmark? What did you like/dislike about each experience?

Only ebay, it worked well. the process went smoothly with the added security of pay pal. Ive only sold a few pieces through there and would stick to it. I have yet to try others and dont intend to. I’d rather the next big app, website for selling clothes to be made.

6. How did you hear about this group? Do you have friends in the group, how do you interact with them within the group (just look at their clothes or do something more)?

I was invited to BSS shortly after becoming a fan of black milk. I dont interact to much with the black milk community as its been growing rapidly and there seems to be a personality attached the community of black milk wearers that while I can admire the attitude of obsession they have about the brand I feel as if I outgrew that phase a while ago.

7. Could you take me through your process? From deciding what to sell to selling it? (Who is involved in this process? How long does it take?)

Firstly I have to decide if I have a piece of clothing just sitting in my room collecting dust that I believe is worth something.

I clean up the garment take some professional photos and determine a resale value

I advertise on Facebook and instagram for any interest personal offers that might wanna set up a pay pal send over exchange which I like doing, quick and easy

If it takes to long to get noticed I put it up on ebay and hope to get some responses

8. Do you interact within the Fb group even when you’re not looking to buy or sell? How and why? Or why not?

Not so much because my notifications go crazy but I know people who have actually made really good friendships through the group.

9. What type of posts do you like? Everything or do you just want to see you favorite categories? Do you look at stuff even if it’s not your size?

Shopping is like a mission for me, I know what I’m looking for so if theres a search engine I go straight for it

10. What are you usually doing right before interacting with the group? How about immediately after?

I try to keep the interaction to a minimum and if there is interaction to be about a transaction. Before and after I guess I’m just going about my usual day

11. Have you ever shared something within the group outside the group? When, why, and how?

not sure what you mean by this questions

12. What mindset are you in when you’re using this group? How are you feeling? Bored/rushed/do you stumble upon it b/c of your newsfeed?

its mixed. if your trying to battle another girl for a piece it can get quite rushed and intense otherwise its like scrolling through a never ending pile of nothing

13. How do you find what you’re looking for? Do you search or just scroll? If you could organize the posts, how would you do it?

A good search engine is VITAL
Categories are okay for those moods when I dont really know what I want but then again they need to be limited but succinct

14. Do you find yourself following a specific category, type of clothing, or person? Like pay extra attention to it?

Not so much, I know what kind of clothing suits me so I go for those styles

15. What type of person do you think uses this fb group the most? What type of person do you think sells the most clothing?

A FANATIC.. for both buy and sell

16. How important is it to you that what you sell is local? Why? Have you ever tried shipping something you’ve sold, how was that experience or why not? Is buying local more attractive? Why? Is there a particular style of clothing you prefer to buy local?

Local is just easier, less risk on the pocket too. I dont want to ship internationally i have no interest in it
and every now and then you get a buyer who lives in driving distance from you and you can meet them in person adn do the exchange personally

17. When you buy/sell, do you prefer using cash or credit? Why? If there was a simple way to use credit, would you prefer that?
I prefer pay pal where ever avail. I dont use credit

18. If you wish you could do anything that you can’t do now when it comes to buying/selling clothes, what would that be? How would that make your life easier?

flat rate shipping world wide.
Have a try on policy and free send back policy

19. How much money would you be willing to spend to have that solution? Why? How would they prefer paying, once, or over time, monthly?
as a buyer I wouldnt subscribe to theses sites if i had to pay for them

Shannen Allison

Met her over the Black Milk clothing group. She’s a model and lives in Scotland. She didn’t want to talk on the phone, so I interviewed her over FB chat. It wasn’t the best interview because she took forever to reply, so I didn’t ask her all the questions. I could also tell she was getting tired of the the questions, so I cut it pretty short.

Generally i’ll try and sell some clothing I dont really wear anymore. Im very bad for keeping hold of things though, so it doesnt happen that often

Very rarely sell it. I dont mind buying things that are usually quite expensive used (such as black milk :P) Ehhh…not particularly, just whenever I feel like it really or maybe have a wee bit extra money!

Well I like that im likely to get pieces for a lot cheaper than the store itself (also why i use it). Ehhh, I dont know what i hate about it really…its just a group :L

All my experiences with ebay have been fine!

I dont really sell things

Well its more likely id be seling to someone thats not near me, so usually use paypal

Willie Tonelli

I met Willie through messaging random people from the Facebook groups. He is the average seller, posts a few times a month, fell in loved with the concept, will do whatever to help out! When I “IChatted” with him, he was with a bunch of his friends at the time. They all said they would love to buy and sell move if there was an application such as Dap.avatars-000010568031-q23fru-crop

Buying Selling Kicks NYC

1.What type of clothes do you sell? What determines if you sell a piece of clothing versus keeping it, giving it away, etc

Mostly shoes, hat, jeans.

He wants the money, its cool that’ people would be able to buy a pair for cheaper price rather then paying an ridicules price at retail.

2. How often do you sell clothing? Buy it? Is there a particular type of clothing you like to buy used? Is there a particular time when you find yourself buying/selling more than usual? How about for the other people in the group?

when your to sell its because buying another pair.

Sell: Two Pairs every month.

Buy: Two Pairs every month about.

Loves SHOES.

3. Why do you use this group? What do you like/dislike about it? Absolute favorite thing and what do you hate the most about it?

Its not that he loves it, there is no better option.

It has a community, where only sneaker heads are there.

Lots of spam, not organized hard to navigate.

4. Is this group the go-to place for you to sell clothing? Why or why not?

Yes, because its the best option out there.

5. What other solutions have you tried to use? Have you ever tried eBay, Craigslist, Plato’s closet or a store that pays you, Poshmark? What did you like/dislike about each experience?

Used to use Ebay, more people are leaning towards Facebook groups, 10x quicker. Ebay does not have as big of a community.

6. How did you hear about this group? Do you have friends in the group, how do you interact with them within the group (just look at their clothes or do something more)?

“I heard about this group for my friends, when you have a person who does it, its more than common to have a group of friends doing it also”

7. Could you take me through your process? From deciding what to sell to selling it? (Who is involved in this process? How long does it take?)

I post an item that I want to get rid of, usually because I need the money for something else, or I just want to get rid of it. Once I post the item, I normally wait. About 10-15 people inquire about it before finding a buyer it could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 7 days. After 7 days if its not selling, I’ll go to ebay.

8. Do you interact within the Fb group even when you’re not looking to buy or sell? How and why? Or why not?

Yes, used WYWTD for that. Loves to check out other peoples “outfits” or clothing.

10. What are you usually doing right before interacting with the group? How about immediately after?

From the time I sell to find a buyer it takes about 1 to 5 days and a meet up within 7 days.

11. Have you ever shared something within the group outside the group? When, why, and how?

If its something a friends looking for, he will tag them in the post/share the link with them so they can contact the buyer.

12. What mindset are you in when you’re using this group? How are you feeling? Bored/rushed/do you stumble upon it b/c of your newsfeed?

“super stressful”, super crowded and impossible to find what your looking for. your post gets flooded out.

Needs something better organized.

13. How do you find what you’re looking for? Do you search or just scroll? If you could organize the posts, how would you do it?

Normally look through for 10-15 minutes to see if anyone is selling, usually posts a status “do you know if anyone is selling particular shoe in the groups”, because the search does not work.

On ebay its super simple, they can search and filter, but its not a community and they don’t like it.  it takes forever to post, and the prices and fees are insane.

17. When you buy/sell, do you prefer using cash or credit? Why? If there was a simple way to use credit, would you prefer that?

Via Paypal for shipping, EVERY MEETUP IS DONE THROUGH CASH.

18. If you wish you could do anything that you can’t do now when it comes to buying/selling clothes, what would that be? How would that make your life easier?

-Better search filter

-“need organizations because Facebook sucks. “

19. How much money would you be willing to spend to have that solution? Why? How would they prefer paying, once, or over time, monthly?

-Dollar via Paypal, a lot of options for people to pay in the settings.

– 4 dollars for the app.

– free/paid version. FREEMIUM model.
